Turning Compassion Into Action by Giving Back
Since 2000, Alma Alexander has committed herself to making a difference by giving back to her community. When asked how she first heard about the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, she explained that her journey into giving came out of a desire to help others, even though she was not originally familiar with the organization itself.
“I wasn’t familiar with the Food Bank,” she began. “I’m only familiar with donating to help people. We’ve been donating to organizations and ministries since 2000. I have $100 a month that I make sure to give back. It’s not always something I know I can afford, but I know it’s something that needs to be done.”
One day, she read an article that opened her eyes to a need in her community, the local Food Bank.
“I was looking for a place to donate, and I saw an article about the Food Bank needing canned goods,” she recalls.
Alma began giving to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank during a summer giveaway and was pleasantly surprised when a staff member reached out to inform her that she had won a grill donated by BBQ Guys.
“I envision that this is bigger than me getting this grill,” she said.
Though the grill might have seemed like a highlight for many, Alma sees the reward as being able to help others. “It’s more than $100 a month or a grill. It’s about making sure people have what they need.”
Life has slowed down for her since she stopped working in 2015, and she admits it’s been harder to stay connected with the people and causes she once had more contact with.
“We aren’t out and about like I used to be. I feel like I’m not able to be involved in people’s lives and hear their stories to help where I can. But there are so many things that God has planted in my way to show me He’s still using me.”
Thanks to the donation made by BBQ Guys and the generosity of our new monthly donors, the Food Bank will be able to provide up to 63,000 more meals to our neighbors in need.
