SCHOOL IS OUT. VOLUNTEERING IS IN.

Wednesday June 26, 2019

Do you need a fun and lively place to bring your youth group or camp this summer?

Well look no further than the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. With a limit of 50 volunteers per shift, we provide an opportunity for your summer group to have fun while making an impact in their community, even dancing and singing have been known to occur. Shifts vary from Monday-Friday 8am-12pm and 1pm-4pm as well as Saturdays from 8am-12pm.

One of the volunteer opportunities available this summer is the sort and repack process. We continuously receive food donations from generous donors that help keep our shelves stocked for those in need. All of our donated food needs to be thoroughly checked before it can be processed through to our agencies.

Volunteers help sort and categorize all non-perishable food items while checking expiration dates. Once the food has been sorted into various categories, the re-boxing process begins which includes moderate lifting and walking in our warehouse. Weighing and boxing the food helps the warehouse staff keep track of what food items we have in our warehouse and is helpful for inventory.

This opportunity is ideal for big groups, as we need multiple people to help this process be as quick and efficient as possible. Plus, our staff will be able to give you the poundage of donated products packed during your shift along with how many meals your work has helped provide. For example, in just one four-hour shift with 50 volunteers, your group could repack up to 40,000 pounds of donated product which could provide over 33,000 meals!

Don’t have a group but still need service hours this summer?

No worries, individuals can volunteer too! Our staff will verify your time spent volunteering for those crucial service hours needed for school, church, clubs, etc.
