Due to increased demand and a decrease in federal food assistance, we are relying on our generous supporters now more than ever. Traditional and virtual food drives are easy, efficient ways to provide immediate food assistance where it’s most needed. Funds provided by virtual fundraisers help us to provide urgent food relief to our neighbors. Check out all the ways you can get involved below.

Host a Food Drive

A food drive can be hosted year-round and can be customized to fit your organization, school group, family, etc. Your efforts make a difference in the variety of foods the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is able to provide for those in the 11-parishes we service. Food drives, accompanied by a Funds drive, are a great way to increase the supply of food and resources to neighbors in need. Find our most needed items here.

  • What types of food are needed most?

We’re especially in need of high-protein, nutrient-rich foods to help nourish children, seniors, and families facing hunger. Great examples include Canned meats (chicken, tuna, salmon), Peanut butter and nut butters, Dried or canned beans, Canned soups and stews with meat or beans, Shelf-stable milk or milk alternatives, Whole grain rice and pasta, Canned vegetables and fruits (preferably low-sodium or 100% juice), and flour, cornmeal, and oats.

These items help us provide more balanced and filling meals to those we serve. Check out the Food Donations page or The Most Needed Items for more details.

  • What types of food can I donate?

Almost anything that you find in your pantry can be donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. It is important our food is safe for consumption. Please ensure all donations are free from spoilage and in its unopened original packaging. While “best by” or “sell by” dates are not direct indicators of safety, food should not be donated if it shows signs of spoilage, regardless of the date.

  • Can we collect funds along with food?

Yes! Our team can help create a campaign page specific to your food drive, or you can start your own virtual food drive online to raise funds alone or in conjunction with a physical food drive. Reach out to our development team at (225) 359-9940 for more information.
