Nutritious Items for Hurricane Preparation

Wednesday August 26, 2020

With the unpredictable impacts of Hurricane Laura, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank wants to ensure safety for our community. Having non-perishable food items are beneficial during uncertain circumstances. Our Nutrition Services team compiled a list of healthy food options to help you prepare for the upcoming storm:

– Canned or packaged tuna or chicken

– Peanut or other nut butter

– Canned vegetables and fruit

– Canned beans

– Whole wheat bread/crackers

– Nuts and/or trail mix

– Cereal and/or protein bars

For the healthiest options, be sure to check nutrition labels for low sodium levels and added sugars. Vegetables can be rinsed to lower sodium content. For a longer duration of fruit, it can be bought canned in 100% for less added sugar. Look for foods high in protein and fiber foods to be kept full longer.
