National Eat Your Vegetables Day
June 17th is National Eat Your Vegetables Day!
Good nutrition is important for good health, preventing diseases as well as healthy growth and development of children and teens. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, but unfortunately they are not always easily accessible to those who need them. Our goal is to introduce healthy foods to vulnerable communities and food deserts with limited access to affordable fruits and vegetables. Our Farm Fresh Healthy Food Initiative provides fresh produce to our agencies that may not have the capacity to store refrigerated produce consistently.
Programs Manager, KiEtha helped to develop the Farm Fresh Healthy Food Initiative. “People are getting fresh produce that they have never even seen before. Then, someone in the group learns how to cook it and shares recipes with other clients and it gets them talking to one another. It’s fun to see,” she said referring to the Farm Fresh Program.
Many farmers around the U.S. are now teaming up with their local food banks in the fight against hunger. Here at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, we love to support our local farmers. Not only do farmers donate excess produce, we purchase excess produce from farmers through our cost-recovery program. We also bring groups of volunteers to glean fields after harvest. Volunteers get the opportunity to experience working on local farms while helping families in need at the same time.
