2024 SJA vs. CHS Challenge Week
Last week, Catholic High School and St. Joseph’s Academy held their annual Challenge Day competition. The schools compete against each other in different categories throughout the week to collect points, which will determined the winning school at the end of the week. The week of Challenge Day is filled with pep rallies, dress days, theme announcements, and more.
One component of Challenge Day is a canned food drive to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Each school has a poundage goal and a monetary goal for donations, and if they meet their goals, they receive points that will be added to their total after the full day of games.
The food that these schools donate will have an impact on families throughout their community. This donation comes at a time when the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is facing emptier shelves than normal going into the summer. Louisiana currently leads the nation in child and senior food insecurity. In the last quarter of 2023, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank witnessed a 40% increase in demand over what was originally planned for in the beginning of the year. As inflation has been rising, many more individuals are turning to the Food Bank to supplement their groceries. The Food Bank has also been witnessing the impact of inflation as the price of food is increasing.
Since 2004, these two high schools have been participating in Challenge Day. This year, the schools collectively raised 65,684 pounds of food and $2,687.60, which is the equivalent of 62,799 meals. This is a great example of how to host a successful food and fund drive. For more tips on hosting a food drive, visit our website here.
