Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Thank you for your interest and support for the Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive! These are just a few frequently asked questions:
- When do I put out my bag of food?
- On the second Saturday of May, simply set out your non-perishable food before your letter carrier’s normal pick-up time. The earlier, the better! Volunteers from the Boys Scouts of America will also be picking up bags of food to help your letter carrier.
- What if it is raining or if there is bad weather?
- Your letter carrier or Boy Scout volunteer will pick up your food bag as scheduled, no matter the weather may be.
- Where do I bring my bag of food donations if it is not picked up?
- If your bag is not picked up, you can bring it to your local, participating post office, or place your food bag by your mailbox on Monday.
- I didn’t receive a special Stamp Out Hunger bag, but I would still like to participate. Do I need to use a special bag?
- No! Special bags are not needed. Paper is sturdy and holds more food, which plastic holds up better if it gets wet. Cloth bags or boxes are also fine.
- Does my food donation stay local?
- Yes! All food stays in your local community and is delivered directly to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to help those in need in your community.
- What do you mean by “non-perishable food”?
- The top requested non-perishable food items are:
- Cereal
- Pasta
- Pasta sauce
- Rice
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Canned meals (such as soups, chili, and pasta)
- 100% juice
- Peanut butter
- Macaroni & cheese
- Canned protein (tuna, chicken, and turkey)
- Beans (canned or dry)
- You can also donate healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal, and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil
- Is there anything that I should not donate?
- Please do not donate frozen food, homemade food or home-canned items. Please do not donate things that have expired or are in glass containers. In keeping with good food-handling and food-safety procedures, food that is opened, damaged or out of code or does not have the official ingredients included will be discarded.
- Are there other ways I can help other than donating food?
- Yes! If you would like to volunteer with sorting donated food, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank at (225) 359-9940 or email volunteers@brfoodbank.org.
